On Sunday, 9 March, Judo Ryu WA hosted the 2025 Fremantle Open, bringing together approximately 100 WA judoka for an exciting day of competition. This event marked the second club competition of 2025 and provided an excellent opportunity for judoka across various age groups—from U9s to +15s—to test their skills on the tatami.
The Fremantle Open served as a valuable preparation event ahead of the 2025 Fuel to Go & Play Judo WA State Championships, which are set to take place in just three weeks on Sunday, 30 March. With the State Championships fast approaching, the competition allowed athletes to refine their techniques, gain match experience, and build confidence in a competitive environment.
Judo WA extends its congratulations to all athletes who competed and acknowledges the dedication and efforts of the volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the success of the event. Without their commitment, events like these would not be possible.
In addition to showcasing WA’s judo talent, the Fremantle Open played a crucial role in developing the next generation of referees. Around a dozen young judoka participated in the Green Shirt Beginner Referee Program, gaining valuable officiating experience under the mentorship of seasoned referees Robert Tichelaar, Celeste Knoester, Clement Chan, and Benjamin Agurto. Their guidance and expertise continue to strengthen the quality of refereeing in WA and foster a pathway for future officials in the sport.
Judo WA looks forward to seeing the continued growth of our athletes and referees as we approach the 2025 State Championships. Well done to everyone involved!
