Judo Western Australia proudly acknowledges the efforts of two talented WA judoka who recently represented Australia in Europe at the 2025 Poznan and Lignano Junior European Cups. These prestigious events featured some of the world’s top junior athletes and provided invaluable international experience for our representatives.
Poznan Junior European Cup
Location: Poznan, Poland
Dates: 5–6 April 2025
Two athletes from Western Australia took to the mat in Poland, competing in highly competitive draws across their respective weight divisions.
Vas Middleton (Perth Judo Club)
Division: Men’s Under 66kg
Vas faced Czech Republic’s Matej Kopecky in the Round of 64. Despite a spirited effort, Vas was thrown for a yuko score before the end of the match, resulting in an early exit from the competition.
Estela Hogarth (UWA Judo Club)
Division: Women’s Under 63kg
After receiving a bye in the first round, Estela advanced to the Round of 16 where she faced local favourite Nadia Wozniczko of Poland. She was unfortunately defeated and moved into the repechage bracket. There, Estela faced Germany’s Luna Semoud but was thrown for ippon, ending her campaign in Poznan.
Lignano Junior European Cup
Location: Lignano, Italy
Dates: 12–13 April 2025
Just one week later, Vas Middleton returned to competition at the Lignano Junior European Cup, continuing his European tour with a strong showing.
Vas Middleton (Perth Judo Club)
Division: Men’s Under 66kg
Vas opened with an explosive victory, throwing Italy’s Gabriele Zamparelli for ippon just seven seconds into the bout. In the Round of 32, he faced Sebestyen Kollar of Hungary. Despite maintaining strong pressure throughout the match, Vas was held in osaekomi in the final minute and eliminated by ippon.
Judo WA congratulates both Vas and Estela for their efforts and dedication while representing Australia on the international stage. Competing at European Cups is a critical step in the development of emerging athletes, and the experience gained will undoubtedly contribute to their continued growth in the sport.
